Have you ever wondered what ancient people did for exercise?
Absent gyms, exercise coaches, those little weights you carry, information on the internet about exercise – all that we have available now, it would probably have to be just plain walking. Now fast forward to the present and what would you guess is considered by experts to be one of the most important ways to promote good health? You’d be right to think of walking.
On any given morning in any area in our country, you will most probably find walkers. A single walker or perhaps one walking with their dog or groups of walkers enjoying the new day. And on weekends, those walkers generally swell to much larger numbers.
These walkers, I would venture to say, are probably in the top percentages of healthy people no matter what their age. And some walkers claim that the longer and the further they walk, seem to find a state of joy.
Now researchers are uncovering some interesting perks associated with this wonderful “sport”.
Here is why walking matters:
♥ Helps promote proper brain development
♥ Gets you away from that couch or TV
♥ Improves your mood – modifies your nervous system so anger and hostility are lessened
♥ Allows you to enjoy that fresh morning air (or afternoon if that’s your preference)
♥ Just 10 minutes of brisk walking daily can reduce the risk of early death by 15%
♥ Reduces risk of serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and some cancers
♥ Aids in weight loss
♥ Increases creativity – tests prove that those who walked regularly had improved inspiration
♥ Helps you sleep better at night because it boosts melatonin production
♥ Becomes a social adventure in that you meet people along the way who are also enjoying moving their feet
I live in an area where it’s relatively quick and easy to walk to various stores. However even though they’re within walking distance, more often than not, I see people getting in their cars to drive just a couple of blocks. They’re missing a perfect opportunity to improve their health and well being in so many ways.
Get started for 15 minutes, then 20 minutes the next day, until you’re up to 30 minutes 5 times a week. This way you’ll see how amazing you’ll start to feel!
So don’t be taken for a ride, step it up, lace up those sneakers, remember the above benefits, and get out to the wonderful outdoors and increase your health. This is how you will just love your life!
