One of the clear-cut facts of aging, such as getting wrinkles or going gray is the fact that our immune systems may not prove to be the fighters that we counted on when we were younger.
Today we can only hope and pray that our immune system will kick in during this Coronavirus situation. So we must protect and help that system in this fight right now.
The good news is that we know certain foods will encourage our immune system to work at its maximum and we must take advantage of that. These foods are considered fighters right now and I’m sure you may have many of these foods in your kitchen already.
So use them and enjoy them and know that you are aiding and abetting that important immune system!
The following foods can have a direct effect on your immunity:
♥ Garlic – toss raw chopped garlic cloves into dishes such as soups, salads, casseroles, dips. If you cannot handle raw garlic just saute it first or you can always keep a jar of garlic in your refrigerator as backup in case you run out of this vital fighter. Garlic strengthens your body’s ability to fight off bugs.
♥ Fermented Foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi which contain the good bacteria that help keep your gut microbiome in balance. They say all illness starts in the gut, so you must feed it with good bacteria such as found in these foods. Also, drink the Switchel I talked about last week.
♥ Citrus fruits such as clementines, limes, lemons, tangerines, oranges, or grapefruit will provide your body with large amounts of vitamin C.
♥ Bell Peppers – particularly the red ones although all bell peppers are beneficial. They’re extremely high in Vitamin C, even more so than oranges! You can make a spread, add them to a pasta dish, or serve grilled. I even throw them into hummus.
♥ Nature’s wonderful greens – broccoli, spinach, kale, and all of nature’s green veggies. They contain anti-oxidants which help to keep you healthy
♥ Raw almonds – contain your daily dose of Vitamin E if you eat a handful daily
♥ Fresh Ginger – contains very potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger warms the body, which is great for helping your body’s natural defenses against germs. It also helps break down toxins in your organs, making them less susceptible to infection
♥ Bone Broth which is full of vitamins and minerals that are easy to digest and easy for your body to use. It also is high in gelatin (from the bones) which makes it good for your gut health and helps in the absorption of those nutrients. In a future blog, I’ll talk about chicken bone broth which is so incredibly tasty and very easy to make.
♥ Cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, anchovies, herring, trout, and tuna help to reduce inflammation and improve your immune system’s function. Fish particularly wild caught salmon are extremely high in Vitamin D.
♥ Raw Honey particularly now when you may feel an itchy or sore throat coming on. Raw honey contains anti-bacterial properties which work in cleaning up your digestive system. Make sure you only buy pure raw unfiltered honey otherwise you may have just bought a jar of sugar. I buy a big jar in Costco which is excellent.
♥ Mushrooms contain many anti-viral properties and are so easy to use in so many dishes. They have a unique ability to stimulate our natural immune defenses. Put them in your egg omelets, casseroles, chicken and meat dishes, and salads.
♥ Nature’s berries – blueberries, cherries, blackberries which fortunately can be found in the freezer department if they’re not in season.
♥ Green Tea – In mid-afternoon make yourself some green tea to which you’ve added some ginger and raw honey. It’s refreshing and you’ll know that you’re helping yourself and your immune system!
And I’m going to say it again because it’s so extremely important.
STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR –
IT WEAKENS AND CRIPPLES YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM!
I hope you are all well and that you are able to get outside and walk. Looks like the weather is warming up enough that the outside world is extremely pleasant to be in and so many flowers are now blooming.
See you next week when we talk further about coping with this situation!
