Let’s face it, we’re probably living in one of the most stressful times in history.
The uncertainty of the future, the worry about getting sick for you and your loved ones…many issues going on right now.
Stress can manifest itself in so many different ways ranging from migraine headaches, loss of sleep, a feeling of helplessness, eating too much or too little, drinking too much, unable to concentrate, wanting to just scream to let it all out – so many ways these insidious feelings can attack us.
So, if some days, or maybe more, you’re somewhat anxious and out of sorts, you’re not alone. Small solace I realize, however here are some suggestions I’ve found that really help with those extremely uncomfortable feelings.
Even small changes or improvements can make a difference in your stress level.
♥ Have a positive attitude. Look at it this way. Instead of thinking “I don’t know how I’ll get through this day”, think this way: “This was a bad day, but tomorrow will be better”.
♥ Journal your stress. Writing down all the things that are disturbing you can sometimes help put them in better perspective. I find putting it down on paper can help in some way to remove it from your thoughts.
♥ Hug someone – yes, even in this age of the Covid. Just make sure you know them and they’re free of any virus. I’ve been doing that since the beginning of the virus. This can stimulate hormones that are very helpful in relaxing.
♥ Consider ways to help others. This charitable act takes the focus off yourself all the while you’re comforting someone else and will help give you a greater sense of well-being. Picking up groceries for a neighbor or even a simple phone call will do.
♥ Laugh – turn on something silly on tv – a comic you like or a funny show. Laughter is an excellent stress releaser. Find stand-up acts on YouTube. Laughter is good for the soul (and great for the anxiety).
♥ Lose yourself in a good book and every day read some of it. A good mystery if that’s your choice, or maybe even, a more comedic type of book. It really doesn’t matter which kind, what matters is that this gives you a little escape during your day.
♥ Remember to breathe. Seriously, there are all ways that breathing can help us out. I find that breathing in slowly for a count of five, then breathing out the same way a couple of times can work wonders.
♥ Exercise – walk, walk, walk. It’s probably one of the best things you can do right now. It’s an immense help to the human condition.
♥ Talk to a friend or anyone you feel comfortable letting it all out with. Chances are they’re feeling the same way and would relish the opportunity to share the experience and your thoughts and concerns.
♥ And last but by no means the least – DO NOT EAT EXCESS SUGAR (or if you’re like me, no sugar at all!). This is so important because among other negatives, sugar causes inflammation, which in turn, is very detrimental to your immune system. I cannot stress enough the importance especially right now in keeping your health in a good state, and know that having too much sugar will do the opposite.
Also keep in mind that like all problems, this too will go away, hopefully, sooner rather than later, and we can all resume our lives. In the meantime, please practice some if not all of the above so your days can be meaningful and calm. We’ll get to that rainbow at the end of the road.
