Maintaining your health doesn’t happen by accident.
Nor can we always depend on our genes to help us out. So it looks like this must be obtained by lifestyle – basically what we choose to eat.
Last week we talked about the only diet we feel will help with continuing good health, or in some cases to improve those less than healthy –
the Mediterranean diet.
By the way when I talk “diet”, this is not a weight loss plan, this is a lifestyle and along the way, your weight will fall right into the category of where it should be.
More than 10,000 studies, published in peer-reviewed journals, indicate it’s possible to reduce the risk of chronic disease by up to 80% just by eating certain foods (and avoiding others).
Let’s get started this minute improving our health and keeping it that way! I know it’s daunting to start something new and/or giving things up that may have brought us comfort and familiarity in the past.
However, let’s look at it this way: If you could improve your health to the extent that every single day you wake up feeling energetic ready to take on the day, and find your entire day goes along those same lines – wouldn’t you want to explore how to do that?
The evidence for the Mediterranean diet (a plant-based diet) to improve your health is so overwhelming,
I cannot believe people would not at least try it. I do not do meal plans since this extraordinary way of eating is so very basic that even right now, you probably have most of these foods right in your kitchen.
And since it is so elementary and simple, there are no strict rules to follow which makes it such an easy way to eat.
The very first thing as I mentioned last week is to remove every single food in your kitchen that is laden with sugar – cookies, cakes, processed foods, bagels, sodas, fruit drinks, etc.
If it’s not there, you cannot eat it!
This is basically how I eat:
♥ Fruits and vegetables – 5 x day. Not to worry if you don’t make it one day, your body will still thrive on what you feed it that day.
♥ Whole grains daily – whole wheat breads and cereals.
♥ Beans – They can be used in so many recipes from soups, stews, dips, hummus, or just eaten right out of the can. They’re also very economical on your pocketbook and can be stored for months and months, so you can always grab a can of beans in a hurry.
♥ Fish, chicken, nuts, olives, seeds – 4 x (or more times) weekly. Eat the good fatty fish such as anchovies, salmon, trout, sardines, tuna, herring, tilapia. These fish will give your system the very valuable Omega 3 fats it needs to keep you healthy.
♥ Extra virgin olive oil – use for making dips and hummus, and also to saute your foods. I also use coconut oil to saute fish.
♥ Dairy products such as yogurt (not the kind with fruit added as they’re saturated with sugar), eggs and cheese 3 x week.
♥ Pasta – a couple of times a week, but make sure it’s just a small side dish coupled with good protein such as fish or chicken.
♥ Drink plenty of water to keep your system hydrated. And in hotter weather, make sure you drink a glass even though you may not be thirsty. Dehydration can sneak up on you and it can be very dangerous. Keep a glass of water sitting on your kitchen counter so that every time you walk in there, you’ll drink some.
♥ A glass of red (or white) wine is good.
♥ Coffee is okay – but make sure you don’t have it too close to bed as it could affect your sleep.
♥ Green tea is great. Many days I make some in the afternoon and always add something to it – turmeric, cinnamon, grated ginger – whatever I have in the kitchen. If I have any organic parsley or greens of that type, I add it to the boiling water for the tea. My philosophy is that every little thing you do will help!
♥ Meat and/or desserts should be eaten only very occasionally as the fats in the meat and the sugar in any dessert is so detrimental to your system that any product like that should be labeled “Eat at your own risk!”.
From my own experience, once you start eating like the above, not only will you notice the change in your energy (much more!), but any cravings you may have experienced will be a thing of the past.
Try it right now since I guarantee you that within one week (or less) of getting started on the above, you will start feeling like a different, albeit, a healthier, more energetic person.
This is my lifestyle and at my age, I can literally outrun anyone in my age range, and many, many who are younger! The feel of good health cannot be described, but you will know it very soon!
You will add years to your life and life to your years and this is how you will love life!
