Last week we talked about having the blues during this otherwise joyful holiday season.
But did you know one of the most wonderful cure-alls for the “sads” is to get outside of yourself and volunteer.
According to a survey, 96% of volunteers believe that volunteering makes people happier in their lives. Of course right now, we’re accustomed during this holiday season to helping others by volunteering for various things.
You can help make and/or distribute meals to those in need, you can bring unwrapped toys for children who will cherish your gift as it’s the only one they may receive, you can visit those who don’t have any visitors. It’s an endless list.
However why limit your stepping forward to just a certain time of the year? Why not continue this gift of helping others all year round. What you may not realize is that giving in this way certainly gives back to you in many ways – some you may not even think of.
♥Social interaction – you’ll meet and make new friends
♥Helps fight depression and reduces stress
♥Feeling of accomplishment
♥A purpose in your life
♥Communication with others boosts self esteem
♥You’ll get a ‘helpers high’ – those who volunteer have a similar physical experience to people who exercise vigorously or meditate.
All kinds of organization are always looking for volunteers.
Here are some suggestions for you to think about – and you may have some of your own.
♥Animal shelters – for all the animal lovers
♥Groups that provide clothing and school supplies to those children in need
♥Service groups such as Kiwanis, Lions Clubs, Rotary
♥Small theater groups always need ushers or people working in the office and for theater lovers, this means you get to see all those plays
So today find a volunteering opportunity
You will be so appreciated – because that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? And that’s how you will find the joy in this particular season and for all the seasons to come.
