A few months ago, I talked about the importance of drinking a glass of room temperature water with the juice of a lemon added to it.
And that’s extremely important for all the reasons I mentioned at that time.
However, recently I have been making that same drink but with some extraordinary added other ingredients.
This is a concoction known as “Switchel”. My understanding of this funny name is that the drink originated in New England, where it became a popular wellness drink in the late 17th century. It was used to revive tired and thirsty farmers at harvest time, and was also called “Haymaker’s Punch”.
Those who’ve used it for years claim that during cold and flu season, their health is never compromised. And now of course, we’re dealing with something much stronger than a cold or even the flu, so let’s do whatever we can do in order to keep our health during this current coronavirus situation.
You can make this mixture right in your own kitchen very easily and the best part is that the recipe will make enough to last 4 days:
Combine the following to make this wellness drink:
♥ 4 cups filtered room temperature water
♥ 1-2 inches Ginger – 4 cut up pieces or grated
♥ 2 tablespoons unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar (with the mother in it)*
♥ Juice of ½ –1 lemon – or other citrus such as lime or a blood orange
♥ 2 tablespoons honey (preferably raw). You can find a very large bottle of the kind I use in Costco.
♥ Cinnamon stick (optional)
♥ Small sprinkle of cayenne pepper (also optional)
Combine all ingredients into a small mason jar, shake well, and keep in the fridge. I take it out of the fridge first thing in the morning so when I’m ready to drink it, it is almost room temperature. It will keep for one week in the refrigerator.
You can even drink a glass later on in the day as a “pick-me-up”.
* The “Mother” is a kind of dark ‘cloud’ floating in the jar of acv. This is the accumulated good bacteria that has twice gone through the fermented processing of the vinegar.
The health benefits are many including:
♥ Lowers blood sugar
♥ Improves insulin sensitivity
♥ Can help kill harmful bacteria or prevent them from multiplying
♥ Reduces belly fat which we know is harmful in itself
♥ Helps to lower cholesterol
♥ Boosts immunity
♥ May improve heart health
♥ Improves digestion
♥ Increases energy
Others claim that it can cure hiccups or soothe a sore throat.
Folks, please take this seriously especially during these times of the Coronovirus.
And tune in next week when we talk about the best foods to eat (and not to eat) right now.
Thank you for visiting – and stay healthy!
